Micro Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MESPT) was established in 2002 by the Government of Kenya and European Union who later relinquished their position to the Royal Danish Embassy in Kenya, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (DANIDA) through a Trust Deed of 2013.
The Trust is a development organization with a purpose to grow small holder farmers and Agri SME’s to increase productivity, income and enhance competitiveness for job creation especially for youth and women. This is achieved through capacity building which includes skills development, technical support, business advisory, financial and market linkages.
Our focus is to facilitate support and provision of integrated financial and business development services for small holder farmers and Agri SME’s in Kenya. This is aimed at enabling beneficiaries to access finance, increase agricultural productivity, agro-processing, and access markets/ trade opportunities. For over a decade, MESPT has partnered with development agencies, donors, and investors to build the capacity of the business services sector and the agricultural sector in Kenya through our unique tripartite business model that links Farmers, Agri- SMEs, and Financial Institutions – creating linkages along value chains. We pride ourselves for successfully implementing 12 agriculture based Programmes that have seen us facilitate creation of 70,000 decent jobs at various levels of the agriculture market systems. **
OVERVIEW OF MESPT WHOLESALE CREDIT MODEL
MESPT is a wholesale lender in Kenya and offers financial services/ provision of credit to Financial institutions for onward lending to small holder farmers and Agri SME’s in Kenya. We have so far worked with over 35 financial institutions and injected over Kes. 6.4B which has positively impacted over 25,000 entrepreneurs. As a strategy in our lending, we also focus on capacity building of financial institution to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery as a cornerstone to building sustainable businesses.
As part of its development programme, MESPT is seeking to augment its existing Credit & BD team with a dynamic, results-oriented, and self-driven professional for this position.
Position Reports to:
Credit & Business Development Manager
1.0 Job Purpose
Credit & Business development function focuses on debt facilitation to financial intermediaries (Microfinance Institutions, Savings and Credit Societies, Producer and Marketing Co-operatives). The position will be charged with identification of potential credit clients, gap assessment, design & documentation of critical strengths and weakness to facilitate structured financial interventions, identification of risks & development of practical risk mitigation measures, development of potential business cases, and identification of necessary linkages for business growth.
2.0 Key Responsibilities
a) Build MESPT Loan portfolio on all products through attracting and recruiting new clients.
b) Undertake client assessment and prepare appraisal reports as per prescribed guidelines for credit facilitation and make necessary recommendation to Credit & Business Development Manager.
c) Initiate appropriate marketing programs for Credit and Business Development unit for business growth.
d) Maintain client credit applications and approvals in the institutional loan management system as per policy and ensure accuracy of data.
e) Prepare credit facility offer letters spelling out terms, conditions, and covenants.
f) Engage and manage legal service providers on legal documentation and registration of appropriate loan documents for perfection of collaterals.
g) Manage loan disbursement process as per credit policy and provide adequate feedback to clients on loan status.
h) Undertake portfolio management to identify default triggers, loan penalties, portfolio at risk, cases qualifying for legal action and cases that need to be under delinquency management.
i) Initiate necessary recovery mechanism as prescribed in the credit policy to mitigate potential loss of capital.
j) Provide timely quarterly loan statements to all active clients.
k) Track posting and update of loan repayments in collaboration with dedicated finance Officer. Escalate any emerging challenges to line manager.
l) Prepare client monitoring schedule for approval by the line manager.
m) Undertake monthly desk monitoring and bi-annual site visits, providing monitoring reports.
n) Prepare quarterly departmental report in collaboration with other credit team members and share with line manager.
o) Take and prepare minutes of the management credit committee.
p) Undertake and document bi-annual market scanning in the area of Agricultural Value Chain and green financing and share with line Manager.
q) Identify, document, and share with line manager possible innovative ways of improving business processes at Credit and Business Development department.
r) Identify and document capacity gaps in financial partners and co-operatives and develop practical recommendations to address the identified gaps.
s) Identify and document key budget considerations and proposals to credit manager.
t) Any other duty assigned by the line manager
3.0 Job Specification
a) Degree in Business related field, Economics, Agribusiness, Finance or equivalent
b) At least 5 years post-qualification experience in the financial sector with exposure in business and corporate lending.
c) Good understanding of key financial drivers and risks for financial institutions.
d) Sound Knowledge of flexible financing models and instruments available for sustainable financing.
e) Good communication and presentation skills, with outstanding reporting skills.
f) Sound financial and analytical skills
g) Good negotiation, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
h) Ability to handle pressure and work with minimum supervision
i) A team player with the drive to improve performance
j) Sound understanding of the current and emerging trends in the financial markets
