Communications Manager NGO Jobs at Kenya Education Fund


Kenya Education Fund (KEF) is an NGO that provides educational scholarships, along with life-skills and career-readiness workshops to Kenyan students who are denied access to schools due to poverty or location. With offices in Nairobi and New York, KEF has helped over 2,400 Kenyan youths access education in hundreds of public schools across Kenya.


Communications Manager Job Responsibilities

  • Strategize messaging for all existing and new communication channels and manage all KEF external communications
  • Work with the C.D. and E.D. to create and execute overall strategic communications plan and oversee communication strategies for all projects
  • Manage all donor communications, including drafting and editing electronic newsletters, acknowledgement letters, phone call scripts and all promotional materials for donors and sponsors
  • Prepare timelines and an editorial calendar
  • Plan, design & write the monthly KEF digital newsletter
  • Plan and carry out social media communications, including fundraising campaigns like “Giving Tuesday” and others
  • Write and solicit material from staff, beneficiaries, Trustees, partners and others for the KEF Blog
  • Manage communications between KEF donors and scholars.
    Lead the preparation of all public communications of any kind
  • Develop metrics-based assessments to consistently analyze the performance and success of all communications and adjust the strategy to maximize effectiveness
  • Manage KEF Website, including updating, design and maintenance
  • Manage and coordinate communications activities among all staff members
  • Organize and maintain electronic press clipping files & photo files
  • Coordinate photography for events and activities for use in communications
  • Solicit and manage permissions, media releases, and site permits for all students and adults, as needed
    o anage all aspects of KEF public relations
  • Write and issue press releases to support KEF activities
  • Develop relationships between KEF and key media houses (journalists and editors)
  • Solicit and respond to press requests in such a way as to maximize visibility of KEF
  • Create and maintain press kit materials for Kenya and U.S. markets
  • Organize interviews & site visits, coordinating with other organizations
  • Manage brand to ensure accuracy in all public representations of our work
  • Monitor and respond to mentions of KEF in the news
  • Work closely with event consultants and other appropriate staff in marketing and publicity for fundraising events including, but not limited to, design and dispersal of event invitation and collateral, drafting press releases and reaching out to media to ensure pre- and post-event coverage

Qualifications for the Communications Manager Job :

  • 3-5 years in a communications position targeting a non-profit international audience
  • Design/layout experience (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher)
  • Experience with Mailchimp or other mass-email products define “Experience”)
  • Experience in photography (same)
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM software like Blackbaud, Neon, etc.….
  • Superior English writing and oral communication skills
  • Must be a team player
  • Superior editing skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • Fluency in social media platforms and analytics methods
  • Strong visual and design sense; Graphic design skills a plus
  • Comfort with website management
  • Background in educational communication or nonprofit communication preferred
  • Minimum 4-year Degree in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism, Public/Media Relations
  • Must be ready to travel throughout Kenya and internationally
  • Must live within commuting distance of KEF Nairobi office
  • Must possess valid passport and Kenyan driver’s license
