The Academic Model Providing Access To Health Care (AMPATH) is a project under the auspices of Moi University School of Medicine, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and Consortium of North American Universities whose aim is to provide sustainable efforts in access to health care and to conduct Reseach and Training. AMPATH also supports the Ministry of Health in ten (10) Counties of Western Kenya,Nyanza and NorthRift Region.

Applications are invited from suitable candidates for the following vacant position under MUCRC-SANOFI Study  to be based at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) – AMPATH

POSITION:                Clinical  Officer ( 2 POSITIONS )

GRADE:                    RS 8

SITE:                          AMPATH, MTRH

Reporting to the Research Medical Officer, the Clinical Officer will work with the study nurse to ensure provision of ethical and effective clinical care within the project. He/she is responsible for the direct clinical care of patients enrolled in trials. Specific duties include:


  • Examining and managing patients enrolled into the different research protocols
  • Prescribing drugs, as recommended in the research protocol as well as any other drugs for the alleviation of the patient’s present medical condition.
  • Educating and counselling patients and family members on adherence to drugs and other issues surrounding care for HIV patients.
  • Scheduling return appointments and tracking follow-ups.
  • Assessing psychosocial needs of patients.
  • Ensuring proper recording of patient’s clinical data and maintaining proper documentation of all study procedures.
  • Working with the other team members to check data quality and ensure continued quality of research records and source documents.
  • Ensuring collection of study specimens as per protocol and working to ensure comfort and safety of the patient.
  • Involving the Principal Investigator or the Investigators in the management of patients with complications.
  • Maintaining professional conduct, towards promoting a high standard of clinical care to study participants.
  • Creating an enabling environment that is conducive to work and learning
  • Working in collaboration with other team players within the research Centre
  • Any other duties as assigned


  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution.
  • Registered with Kenya Clinical Officers Association.
  • Certificate of Registration from the Clinical Officers’ Council.
  • A minimum of one year post-qualification experience preferably in a clinical research setting
  • Understanding of GCP/ICH and HSP guidelines.
  • Shown competence and ability in organizing, performing and discharging duties and responsibilities.
  • Additional training will be an added advantage.
